Brilliant documentary, with a softer, less angry Moore taking a good look at the current operation of the center of America's private health system, and compares them with the universal systems in Canada, England and France. The best-who argue that they say is the bias of its contents, or simply choose the HMO worse stories, but that's exactly what to do to drive their point home! The content here is much less controversial than in his previous films. It is widely known that, despite being one of the richest countries in the world, the states are far from best when it comes to the care of their own. The DivX film Sicko gives the impression that Canadians expect an average of 45 minutes to get seen in a hospital. Being a Canadian, I will say right away that is not the case. There is a problem here in Canada with long waiting times (in the hospital and surgery), however, the system still works well, and everyone is taken care of, regardless of their economic or social position. Displaying think really made me realize how much our system of universal health care for granted. Some of the HMO horror stories are shocking Moore is (to say the least). While this Sicko movie does not pack quite the punch, compared with the Columbine and Fahrenheit, will still turn a lot of heads. Everyone should see this movie. |
After reading all the comments and reviews, the Sicko Documentary was all that was expected. Moore does a good job in making his point. What bothered me a little was his black and white view of the health care industry - is either public or private. In fact, many Western countries have a "hybrid" system. For example here in Finland we have a very reasonable public health system (it is not totally free to the patient, even very cheap), but we also have private clinics, even if you want faster service and are willing to pay more. You can also obtain insurance to private companies, providing additional financial support and / or service in the private clinics in case of illness. Also, some workplaces and medical institutes are free. A portion of the cost of drugs is replaced by the government in any case, and there is an annual limit after which they are completely replaced. I think it would be quite easy to establish such a system in the U.S.. No need to socialize health TOTALLY. There is no need for the insurance company to "go" (Moore, as saying) that you only have to step aside a bit and stop being the main authority. Moreover, if insurance companies have to compete with free (health care), there is only one thing you can do: give a really good service! |
