Charley is a hustler. He's been on his own long enough to know how to work people and situations. He finds that the father who threw him out as a teen ager has died. He's left him a now antique convertible and something more important, a previously unknown brother, Raymond. Raymond is Autistic, but is able to calculate complicated mathematical problems in his head with great speed and accuracy. Their father has left his fortune to Raymond who doesn't even understand what money is for. Charley is enraged by what has happened and by his father keeping Raymond's existence from him for his entire life. He kidnaps Raymond from his residential home but then finds that Raymond will only fly Qantas. The two begin a long road trip that will lead them to an understanding of each other.

This is a good movie, although it tends toward the sentimental cheesily, and I do not want to take it wrongly stating that the Golden Age to be considered just that: a good film, not Best Movie, Best Actor, Best Director and Best Screenplay, and which won the 1989 Academy Awards. It is shocking to think that was the best Hollywood could come up in their old age. The film: Rain Man is well developed, but the man-item union had earlier been hammered to death. Dustin Hoffman picture of an autistic man, is fascinating but not terribly convincing, and while Tom Cruise is welcome, as usual, thanks to his natural charisma, his performance falls short of greatness, as usual. The others are progressively less impressive, and the script while reading and writing with the exception of the obligation to sprinkling of words wrong, too pedantic for his subject, and the plot too pat and artificial. Given all that is eminently watchable, certainly better than most of the dreck thrown around it, making an effort of spiritual elevation (which is probably why a guilt-mounted Academy voted for him), and offers several tender moments of humor and pathos.
