| I have seen the great Woody Allen Mighty Aphrodite film for the first time in nearly 10 years and I am more convinced than ever that one of his most under rated movies (but then how do we judge an artist - for their individual or all of your work?). And if you suddenly feel like I'm getting too serious here, let's say that this is a very funny movie. For now there is no escaping the fact that Woody Allen's films are largely autobiographical, he used what is happening in his own life to feed their arguments. To an audience is sometimes only apparent in retrospect as the press is quick to exploit Woody's foibiles. But he beat us to it, and for that reason, "Mighty Aphrodite" he tries to hit a murderer - is very, very funny, but in relation to adoption, child marriages and also very close to touching. I laughed until I cried (the juxtaposition of the contemporary with the Greek chorus is a brilliant device) and, finally, I just cried. As for the Mighty Aphrodite Comedy film itself is beautifully shot and brilliantly edited (and with some inspired choreography) and acted with the highest order: (Helena Bonham-Carter at the foot of Mia Farrow as well as Kenneth Branagh was in for Woodmeister " celebrities "- and how we can get incestuous). But the last word has to go to Mira Sorvino, who is funny, touching and inspiring. Sometimes (not always) of the Academy is the right thing and Oscar was one of his best times. |
| Woody Allen Mighty Aphrodite film about finding the mother of his adopted son is fun, but not particularly cheerful. Not that it's depressing, but it has kind of a sad streak in it. Not necessarily melancholy or tragedy, but something subtle, in the poignant portraits. But in the end is an uplifting and hopeful film. The film: Mighty Aphrodite is only hampered by some minor things. There are occasional moments of unrealistic desirability of advancing the plot. And there is a Greek stage that the story in parts. It becomes annoying and can sometimes break the rhythm of the film, but there are a number of segments and hilarious lines that deliver on what I need. It's also nice to see F. Murray Abraham in an Allen film! And then there is a lack of chemistry between Lenny (Woody) and his on screen wife, played by Helena Bonham-Carter. This is strange in view of Woody's films are so carefully cast. It is possible that this discrepancy is that Woody was 40 years her senior when making this film. That creates a metaphor of layers Woody's personal life during this period. This is when the left on Mia Farrow and married his adopted son, Soon Yi, she about 40 years younger than Allen. Haha, the very life of Woody creepier is that the fiction! I guess that's the old saying, but ... Woody: a smart, weird weird. A real character. 6.5 |
| I did not expect to enjoy "Mighty Aphrodite", due to very cold to lukewarm reviews it received, but was pleasantly surprised. The story revolves around a foster parent affected with curiosity about the mother of his adopted son. Located in secret and she finds that she is a prostitute. The movie: Mighty Aphrodite revolves around the comic antics that when it attempts to make women all together and in the straight and narrow. The Mighty Aphrodite Comedy movie is much better than the reviews I read led me to believe, with much of the old Allen gift for comic dialogue in evidence. It is undoubtedly a better Mighty Aphrodite Comedy film "Manhattan Murder Mystery", by their effort, and in many ways reminds me of "Broadway Danny Rose." The end is - surprisingly - oddly poignant and affecting, in a bittersweet kind of way. I think this is one of the best recent Woody films. One caveat: some humor in the movie: Mighty Aphrodite involves parodying some of the conventions of classical Greek drama - the chorus, masks, etc etc, what "deus ex machina 'means really adds to the humor of one of the devices in the plot that helps to finish the story. Jack Warden wonderful to see a comic cameo as a blind beggar (shades of Oedipus?). |
